in this sculpture series, titled Ballet, i am interested in exploring the limits of clay. how thin can i get it before it becomes unworkable and too delicate? through a process of rolling and flipping and rolling between plastic sheets, i create a giant crêpe pancake often several feet wide. i tear the clay all around the edge, and then carefully crumple it into an organic form that suggests movement, like a dancer frozen in mid-step. the humidity generated by the plastic sheets creates a texture similar to fabric or skin. glaze is applied to only the top or bottom of the piece, including hidden folds and curving edges.
