Ballet

In this sculpture series, titled Ballet, I am interested in exploring the limits of clay. How thin can I get it before it becomes unworkable and too delicate? Through a process of rolling and flipping and rolling between plastic sheets, I create a giant crêpe pancake often several feet wide. I tear the clay all around the edge, and then carefully crumple it into an organic form that suggests movement, like a dancer frozen in mid-step. The humidity generated by the plastic sheets creates a texture similar to fabric or skin. Glaze is applied to only the top or bottom of the piece, including hidden folds and curving edges.
