Matriarchs is an exploration of Jewish lineage, history, and non- and anti-patriarchal power. While working with the clay, I am sitting at the knee of ancestors from ancient times, healers in the Eastern European shtetlach, and queer, trans, radical folx from the current era – soaking up their hard-won wisdom.
I start each sculpture with a pinch pot, then slab build the walls of the vessel. Every indentation is made individually with a leather stamp, and each sculpture has thousands. I apply a cobalt-based glaze to the indentations and wipe off any glaze from the raised surface. Depending on the piece, I apply an additional glaze, often white.
